Sharon Byrne attains “Diva” status among NJ nurses

Sharon Byrne, co-chair and associate professor of nursing, will be honored at the New Jersey State Nurses Association Institute for Nursing’s annual Diva and Don Gala on Wednesday, December 7.

She is one of 13 nurses who will be recognized at this year’s event for extraordinary contributions to the advancement of health care and the profession of nursing in New Jersey.

Byrne teaches across the nursing curriculum with a concentration in the nurse practitioner MSN program. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner has worked in primary care, occupational health, and medical and radiation oncology. Currently, she maintains a clinical practice with MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper as an advanced practice nurse in the Cancer Outreach Project.

Inspired by her own volunteer work with Explorer Sans Frontieres, a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian efforts in education, health care, and outreach in Port au Prince, Haiti, Byrne developed and implemented TCNJ’s first global course in nursing. In January 2016, she took graduate and undergraduate nursing students to Haiti for first-hand experience providing health care in a developing country.

Byrne is published in the areas of oncology nursing, nurse education and global health. She serves as a peer reviewer for Oncology Nursing Forum, Nurse Educator, and The Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The Institute for Nursing has contributed more than $500,000 in scholarships to nursing students as a result of benefit events such as the Diva and Don Gala.
