TCNJ recognized for sustainability efforts

The College of New Jersey has been selected by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection as one of the three top performers in the 2017 New Jersey Charging Challenge. This is the second consecutive year TCNJ has earned the honor.

“We are grateful to the NJDEP for recognizing our ongoing commitment to sustainability here at TCNJ,” said Vice President for Administration Curt Heuring. “We will continue to work to find new ways to lessen our environmental impact.”

The NJ Charging Challenge: Electrify Your Workplace Recognition Program recognizes employers in New Jersey that are making their workplaces “Electric Vehicle-Ready,” celebrates their successes, and encourages other employers to follow their lead.

TCNJ was chosen for its extraordinary commitment to the New Jersey Charging Challenge by installing five additional Level 2 charging stations in Lot 7 (Metzger garage), utilizing renewable energy, and promoting the use of the stations to students, faculty, and the public.

The primary power for the charging stations comes from the college’s co-generation plant, which provides electricity to the campus via a natural gas fired turbine. Waste heat from the turbine is used to generate steam to heat buildings, heat domestic water and drive chillers to cool the campus.

TCNJ’s Jack Fehn and Tom Schweitzer accepted the award for the college at the 18th Annual Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards ceremony at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton on December 11.
